Daily Journey: Day 204

Performance Turns Everything Into a Test

Scripture (ESV)

“Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men.” — Colossians 3:23

Performance changes the way you live because nothing feels neutral anymore. A meeting becomes a test. A conversation becomes a test. Even good work can start feeling like proof that you deserve your place.

That is exhausting because you’re never just doing the thing in front of you. Part of you is always watching how you’re doing.

The deeper problem is identity. If your worth rises and falls with performance, then failure becomes much bigger than failure. A bad day starts feeling like a verdict.

Paul gives us a different center. Work heartily for the Lord. Do the work well, but stop asking the work to tell you who you are.

Why this matters

Performance makes ordinary life feel like an audition. Identity received from God lets you work without turning every result into a verdict on your worth.

Reflection

Where does your life feel like something you constantly have to prove?

Word of the Day

Performance: Living as though worth depends on how well you are doing or how well others receive you.

“Work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men.” — Colossians 3:23 (ESV)
