Daily Journey: Day 198
You Never Had as Much Control as You Thought
Scripture (ESV)
“Yet you do not know what tomorrow will bring.” — James 4:14
We dealt with control earlier as the desire to guarantee an outcome. Here’s the uncomfortable part underneath that: most of what we call control is really influence.
Our decisions matter. We can prepare well and make wise choices. But none of that means tomorrow owes us the result we planned. One phone call can rearrange a year you thought was already mapped out.
James says we don’t know what tomorrow will bring. That isn’t pessimism. It’s creaturehood. We have been given real responsibility without being given sovereignty, and those two things are easy to confuse when life is going well.
The illusion usually breaks when something happens that no amount of preparation could prevent. In that moment, we can become angry that control failed us or finally admit it was never ours in the first place.
Why this matters
You can take responsibility without pretending you run the outcome. That distinction removes a weight God never gave you.
Reflection
What are you calling control that is really only influence?
Word of the Day
Control: The illusion that human effort can guarantee what ultimately remains outside human sovereignty.
