Daily Journey: Day 199

Pride Wants a Better Seat

Scripture (ESV)
“For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.” — Luke 14:11

We first looked at pride as the refusal to need God. This version is different. This is pride that wants position.

You can feel it when doing good work stops being enough and you start needing the work to be noticed. Somebody else gets recognized and it bothers you more than it should. You walk into a room and immediately start figuring out where you stand in it.

Jesus talks directly about people choosing the better seat. He knows what is going on underneath that instinct. We want some visible confirmation that we matter.

Humility doesn’t mean pretending you have no value. It means you’re no longer responsible for manufacturing your value in every room. You can receive your place from God and stop fighting for a better seat.

That kind of humility is freeing. Somebody else can be celebrated without it taking anything away from you.

Why this matters
When position becomes too important, people around you stop being people and start becoming competition. Humility gives you room to serve without constantly measuring where you stand.

Reflection
Where has recognition started to matter more than you want to admit?

Word of the Day
Pride: The impulse to elevate yourself rather than receive your place and worth from God.
“Everyone who exalts himself will be humbled…” — Luke 14:11 (ESV)
