Examination Is Not Beating Yourself Up

Scripture (ESV)

“Search me, O God, and know my heart! Try me and know my thoughts!” — Psalm 139:23

Examination can go sideways fast. Some people avoid it completely because they don’t want to see what’s there. Others turn it into self-attack and call that spiritual maturity. Neither one is honest.

Examination isn’t beating yourself up. It’s bringing your life before God and letting Him tell the truth. That’s very different from letting shame do the talking.

David doesn’t say, “I’ll search myself and figure everything out.” He says, “Search me, O God.” That matters. We’re not always clear judges of our own hearts. We miss things. We excuse things. We exaggerate things. We condemn what God is correcting and protect what God is exposing.

Leadership needs examination because unexamined leaders leak. Their fear leaks. Their pride leaks. Their insecurity leaks. Their need to control leaks. And eventually people around them start carrying the weight of what was never brought before God.

Why this matters

If you never examine your life before God, hidden patterns will keep leading from underneath. But when examination is practiced rightly, truth can surface without shame becoming the loudest voice.
