Pride Wants to Be the Source

“God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” — James 4:6

Pride is easy to caricature. We picture somebody arrogant, loud, full of themselves. Sure, that’s pride. But I’m not convinced that’s the version most of us actually need to worry about.

I think pride gets much closer to home when we start resisting the fact that we need God. We want to be the one who can handle it. We’d rather figure it out ourselves than admit we don’t know what to do. And when something finally gets too heavy, asking for help can feel almost like failure. That tells us something. Somewhere along the way, strength got confused with self-sufficiency.

The problem is that self-sufficiency doesn’t fit reality. You didn’t create yourself. You don’t sustain your own life. You can’t make your heart beat one more time by sheer force of will. Everything about being human is received, and pride keeps fighting that. It wants to take what was given and start acting like it came from us.

That’s why James uses such strong language. God opposes the proud and gives grace to the humble. Humility isn’t thinking less of yourself or walking around with your head down. It’s finally agreeing with reality. God is the source. You’re not. And once you stop fighting that, dependence stops looking like weakness and starts looking like sanity.

Why this matters

Pride can hide inside competence for a long time. If needing God feels embarrassing, inconvenient, or like something you should have grown past by now, pride may be closer than you think.
