Daily Journey: Day 185

When Capability Becomes the Problem

Scripture (ESV)

“Not that we are sufficient in ourselves to claim anything as coming from us, but our sufficiency is from God.” — 2 Corinthians 3:5

One of the strange things about self-reliance is that it can grow out of something good. You become capable. People trust you. You’ve been through enough hard situations that you know how to keep your head and figure things out. None of that is bad.

But capability can start lying to you. Because you’ve carried a lot, you begin assuming you should be able to carry everything. Asking for help starts feeling unnecessary, and sometimes even embarrassing. Eventually, being the one who can handle it becomes part of how you understand yourself.

Then something happens that you can’t fix.

I’ve had enough of those moments to know how revealing they can be. You find out very quickly whether your ability was something you were using or something you were trusting. Paul was an incredibly capable man, but he still refused to call himself sufficient. His sufficiency came from God.

That distinction matters. God may give you enormous capacity. He never intended for capacity to replace dependence.

Why this matters

Self-reliance is difficult to see when it’s producing results. Sometimes the first sign of freedom is admitting that being capable and being sufficient are not the same thing.

Reflection

Where has your ability to handle things made it harder for you to acknowledge your need for God?

Word of the Day

Self-reliance: The attempt to live or lead from yourself as though your own strength is enough.

“Our sufficiency is from God.” — 2 Corinthians 3:5 (ESV)
