Daily Journey: Day 182
When Fear Starts Making the Decision
Scripture (ESV)
“For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.” — 2 Timothy 1:7
Fear is part of being human. I don’t think the goal is to become the kind of person who never feels it. That sounds spiritual, but it isn’t very honest. There are situations that should get your attention. There are decisions where the stakes are real.
The problem starts when fear moves from something you feel to something you obey. I’ve seen that happen in leadership more times than I can count. You start with a legitimate concern, but before long you’re shaping the whole decision around what you’re afraid might happen. You avoid the conversation because of the reaction. You hold back what needs to be said because you don’t want to lose somebody. The decision may still look reasonable from the outside, but fear has quietly become part of the process.
Paul’s words to Timothy don’t tell him to deny what he feels. They remind him that fear isn’t where his life comes from. God has given him what he needs to move faithfully even when the situation feels uncertain. That’s a much more honest kind of courage than pretending nothing scares you.
Why this matters
Fear becomes dangerous when it gets authority. You can acknowledge what you’re afraid of without letting it decide what faithfulness looks like.
Reflection
What decision are you currently viewing mostly through what you’re afraid might happen?
Word of the Day
Fear: The inward alarm that becomes disordered when it takes authority over trust and obedience.
