Distraction Is One of the Quiet Enemies of Leadership Scripture (ESV) “Let us run with endurance the race that is set before us.” — Hebrews 12:1 ⸻ One of the things I’ve noticed about leadership over the years is how easy it is to become distracted. Not necessarily by bad things, but often by simply…
Why Reflection Matters More Than Speed Scripture (ESV): “Teach us to number our days that we may get a heart of wisdom.” — Psalm 90:12 ⸻ Leadership has a strange way of speeding life up. The more responsibility you carry, the more decisions show up. Messages to answer. Problems to solve. Situations that need clarity….
Why Patience Is a Leadership Skill Scripture (ESV): “The end of a matter is better than its beginning, and patience is better than pride.” — Ecclesiastes 7:8 ⸻ I used to think patience was mostly a personality trait. Some people are naturally calm. Others are wired to move faster. Leadership, I assumed, belonged to the…
Why Integrity Quietly Builds Authority Scripture (ESV): “Whoever walks in integrity walks securely.” — Proverbs 10:9 ⸻ Integrity sounds simple until it costs you something. When things are easy, most people appear consistent. Values align with behavior because there isn’t much pressure pushing against them. But leadership eventually creates pressure. Real pressure. Decisions that disappoint…
Why Clarity Reduces Anxiety More Than Intensity Scripture (ESV): “Let what you say be simply ‘Yes’ or ‘No.’” — Matthew 5:37 ⸻ When pressure builds, my instinct is to push. Talk faster. Decide quicker. Raise urgency. Make sure everyone knows this matters. I’ve done it more than once. And every time, I’ve told myself it…
Why Emotional Reactivity Erodes Credibility Scripture (ESV): “Whoever is slow to anger has great understanding.” — Proverbs 14:29 ⸻ I don’t think most leaders intend to be reactive. Reactivity usually shows up in small ways. A sharper tone. A quicker interruption. A decision made just to relieve tension. It feels justified in the moment —…
Why Authority Is Stewardship, Not Control Scripture (ESV): “Whoever would be great among you must be your servant.” — Matthew 20:26 ⸻ I’ve felt the pull toward control more times than I care to admit. When outcomes matter — and they do — control feels responsible. Tighten the grip. Clarify the direction. Push harder. Make…
Why Presence Often Leads Better Than Direction Scripture (ESV): “The fruit of the Spirit is… peace.” — Galatians 5:22 ⸻ Leaders are trained to provide direction. Clarity. Vision. Decisions. Those matter. But I’ve learned that direction rarely lands well if presence is unstable. People don’t first respond to what leaders say — they respond to how…
Why Stability Is a Greater Gift Than Solutions Scripture (ESV): “A gentle answer turns away wrath.” — Proverbs 15:1 ⸻ In leadership, it’s easy to believe our value comes from having answers. When tension rises, people look to leaders for solutions — clarity, direction, a plan. Over time, leaders can begin to equate faithfulness with…
Why Urgency Is Not the Same as Importance Scripture (ESV): “Teach us to number our days that we may get a heart of wisdom.” — Psalm 90:12 ⸻ One of the most subtle leadership traps is confusing urgency with significance. Urgency demands immediate action. Importance demands careful attention. Under pressure, leaders often default to urgency…
