Daily Journey: Day 208
Your Own Verdict Is Not Final
Scripture (ESV)
“For whenever our heart condemns us, God is greater than our heart, and he knows everything.” — 1 John 3:20
There are people who excuse themselves too easily. There are also people who do the opposite. They keep reopening the case against themselves long after they have confessed and dealt honestly with what happened.
That can look humble, but it is not always humility. Sometimes it means you have given your own judgment more authority than God’s.
John says God is greater than our heart. That matters because our internal verdict is not automatically accurate. We can be too easy on ourselves, but we can also be harsher than God.
If something needs repentance, repent. If something needs repair, make the repair. But once God speaks grace, you do not become more spiritual by refusing to receive it.
Why this matters
Self-judgment can feel responsible because it keeps you hurting. Receiving grace requires enough humility to let God’s verdict be greater than your own.
Reflection
Where are you still judging yourself for something you have already brought honestly before God?
Word of the Day
Self-judgment: Treating your own internal verdict as final even when it no longer agrees with God’s truth.
