Daily Journey: Day 195

We Can Make Almost Anything Sound Reasonable

Scripture (ESV)
“Be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.” — James 1:22

One thing humans are really good at is explaining ourselves. We know why we reacted the way we did. We know what the other person did first. We know how tired we were and how much pressure we had been under. Sometimes all of that is true.

The problem is that a true explanation can still become a hiding place. Understanding why I did something doesn’t automatically make what I did right. I can give you the full history behind my reaction and still need to own the reaction.

James says we can hear the Word and deceive ourselves. That should make us careful about how quickly we assume hearing truth means we have submitted to it. You can understand the passage perfectly and still build a personal exception around your own behavior.

I’ve learned to pay attention when every explanation leaves me innocent. That usually means I need to look again.

Why this matters
Self-deception allows us to stay unchanged while still feeling justified. Honesty begins when we care more about what’s true than about defending our version of the story.

Reflection
Where might a reasonable explanation be keeping you from owning something honestly?

Word of the Day
Self-deception: Believing a version of reality that protects you from truth you do not want to face.
“Be doers of the word… deceiving yourselves.” — James 1:22 (ESV)
