Daily Journey: Day 189
Your Life Didn’t Change. You Looked Sideways.
Scripture (ESV)
“But let each one test his own work… and not his neighbor.” — Galatians 6:4
Comparison can change how you feel about your life in a matter of minutes without changing anything about your actual life. You were fine with what you had until you saw what somebody else had. You felt good about your progress until you noticed how far ahead somebody else seemed to be.
Your life didn’t change. You looked sideways.
That’s what makes comparison such a distortion of reality. Another person’s story becomes the lens through which you start judging your own. Their timing becomes the schedule you think you should be on. Their opportunity makes your own assignment feel smaller, even though God never asked you to carry theirs.
Paul brings us back to our own work. That is not permission to become self-absorbed. It is permission to stop living as though everybody else’s life is commentary on yours. You have something in your hands that came from God. Faithfulness begins there.
Why this matters
Comparison can make you abandon gratitude for a problem that did not exist until you looked sideways. Receiving your own life again brings you back to reality.
Reflection
Whose life have you been allowing to change how you see your own?
Word of the Day
Comparison: Using someone else’s life as the measure for your own worth or assignment.
