Temptation Usually Knows What You Want
Scripture (ESV)
“Each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire.” — James 1:14
James says something about temptation that we can easily miss. He starts with desire. That means temptation isn’t simply some bad thing floating around outside us waiting to attack. It usually connects with something we already want.
Sometimes what we want isn’t even wrong. You may want relief from something that hurts. You may want to feel loved after being rejected. You may want some peace after carrying pressure for a long time. The desire can make complete sense while the path being offered is still wrong.
That’s what temptation does so well. It offers a shortcut between desire and satisfaction. You don’t have to wait. You don’t have to trust God with it. You don’t have to stay inside the boundaries He gave you. Just take what you want now.
If all we do is fight the behavior, we may never get underneath it. Sometimes the better question is, “What am I actually looking for right now?” Once the desire has a name, you can bring the real thing before God instead of fighting shadows.
Why this matters
Hidden desire gives temptation room to work without being understood. Honesty doesn’t remove temptation, but it lets you deal with what is actually underneath it.
