Daily Journey: Day 124

Devotion Is What Gets Your Heart

Scripture (ESV)

“You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.” — Matthew 22:37

Devotion is not just being intense about spiritual things. That matters to say, because some people are intense but not actually devoted. They are busy, loud, involved, opinionated, and always around the right language, but their heart is still scattered.

Devotion has to do with love and loyalty. What gets your heart when nobody is forcing anything? What do you keep returning to? What do you protect, feed, defend, and make room for? That usually tells the truth better than what we say we value.

Jesus does not call for some thin religious affection. He says heart, soul, and mind. All of it. Not because God is needy, but because divided devotion tears people apart. We were not made to hand ultimate weight to things that cannot carry it.

And when devotion to God starts taking its rightful place, other loves do not disappear. They get healthier. Family, work, leadership, mission, rest, responsibility — all of it finds better order when none of it is forced to be god. Devotion does not shrink your life. It puts your loves back where they belong.

Why this matters

If your devotion is divided, your life will feel pulled apart even when you are doing good things. But when love for God becomes central, everything else can begin to find its rightful place.

Reflection

What keeps receiving the kind of heart-level devotion that belongs first to God?

Word of the Day

Devotion: Ordered love and loyalty given first to God and then rightly expressed in the rest of life.

“You shall love the Lord your God…” — Matthew 22:37 (ESV)
