Daily Journey: Day 169

Abiding Is Not Visiting

Scripture (ESV)

“Abide in me, and I in you… apart from me you can do nothing.” — John 15:4–5

Abiding sounds peaceful until you realize how much of your life is built around leaving.

We visit God when we need peace. We visit Scripture when we need a word. We visit prayer when life gets heavy. We visit dependence when we run out of strength. Then we go back to living like the branch can carry itself.

Jesus doesn’t call us to visit. He says abide.

Abiding means remaining connected. Staying. Dwelling. Living from the Vine instead of treating Him like spiritual support for a life we’re still trying to run on our own. It isn’t dramatic. It isn’t flashy. It’s the quiet, ongoing life of dependence.

And Jesus is blunt: apart from Me you can do nothing. Not less than ideal. Nothing. That isn’t meant to shame us. It’s meant to bring us back into reality. Fruit doesn’t come from the branch trying harder to look alive. Fruit comes from union, connection, and life received from the source.

Why this matters

If you only visit God, your life will keep running on your own supply. But when abiding becomes practice, dependence becomes continuous instead of occasional.

Reflection

Where are you visiting God occasionally instead of remaining connected to Him?

Word of the Day
