Daily Journey: Day 131
Prayer Is Where You Stop Pretending
Scripture (ESV)
“Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.” — Philippians 4:6
Prayer gets talked about so much that we can forget how exposing it really is. Real prayer is not religious decoration. It is not the spiritual thing we add to the end of a meeting so everybody feels better. Prayer is where we stop pretending we are carrying life fine on our own.
That is why prayer is harder than people admit. It puts us back in our place. Not in a shameful way, but in a truthful way. We are not the source. We are not the sustainer. We are not the ones holding every outcome together. Prayer drags that reality into the open.
And leaders need this badly. Leadership can train you to keep moving, keep answering, keep deciding, keep fixing, and keep carrying. After a while, prayer can start feeling like something you do after you have already worked through every other option. But prayer is not the last resort of a tired leader. It is the first honest act of a dependent one.
Paul says, “in everything.” Not just the crisis. Not just the obvious spiritual things. Everything. The pressure, the people, the decisions, the fear, the uncertainty, the responsibility, and the things you do not even want to say out loud yet. Bring it before God. Not because He needs to be informed, but because you need to stop acting like you can hold it without Him.
Why this matters
If prayer becomes optional, self-reliance will quietly become normal. But when prayer becomes practice, dependence stops being an idea and starts becoming the posture of your actual life.
Reflection
Where are you carrying something that should have already been brought before God?
