Daily Journey: Day 118

Listening Becomes More Direct

Scripture (ESV)
“My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.” — John 10:27

Earlier, listening meant receiving instead of rushing to respond. That was necessary. A lot of us do not listen well because we are already preparing our defense, our answer, or our next move.

But at this point, listening has to become more direct. This is about listening to God. Not in a weird, untethered way where every feeling becomes His voice. That can get dangerous fast. God is not asking us to baptize every internal impression and call it His voice.

Listening to God begins with His Word. It is shaped by prayer, clarified by obedience, tested through wisdom, and often confirmed through correction, counsel, and providence. It is not detached from reality. It is grounded in the God who has spoken.

The issue for many of us is not that God has been silent. It is that we have been loud. Loud with our preferences, fears, assumptions, plans, and need to control the outcome. Listening begins when we become quiet enough under His Word to receive what He has already made plain.

Why this matters
If you do not learn to listen to God, you will mistake your strongest thoughts for direction. But when listening is grounded in His Word, your life becomes less reactive and more responsive to His leading.

Reflection
Where might God already be speaking clearly through His Word, but you have been too loud inside to receive it?

Word of the Day
Listening: Receiving God’s truth through His Word, prayer, correction, counsel, and providence without rushing to control the outcome.
