Daily Journey: Day 202

Ambition Needs to Answer to God

Scripture (ESV)

“Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves.” — Philippians 2:3

I don’t think ambition is automatically bad. Wanting to build something can be good. Wanting your work to matter can be good. The problem starts when the thing you’re building becomes responsible for proving that you matter.

That can happen slowly. You begin with a real calling, then somewhere along the way the result starts carrying too much weight. You need the growth. You need the recognition. You need the win.

Paul doesn’t condemn effort. He warns about selfish ambition. That is ambition turned back toward the self. The work may still look good from the outside, but the reason for doing it has changed.

Ambition becomes healthier when God is allowed to question what it is really for.

Why this matters

Good work can become unhealthy when success starts carrying your identity. Calling and ambition are not the same thing.

Reflection

What are you trying to build, and what do you hope it proves about you?

Word of the Day

Ambition: The desire to achieve or build, which becomes disordered when personal significance becomes the real goal.

“Do nothing from selfish ambition…” — Philippians 2:3 (ESV)
