Daily Journey: Day 183

Borrowing Trouble From Tomorrow

Scripture (ESV)

“Casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.” — 1 Peter 5:7

Anxiety does something strange with time. It takes something that might happen tomorrow and makes you carry it today. Nothing has actually changed yet, but your mind is already living inside the conversation, the outcome, or the problem you’re afraid is coming.

I want to be careful here because anxiety isn’t imaginary. It can be deeply physical, and sometimes there are real clinical issues involved that shouldn’t be reduced to “just trust God more.” That’s too simplistic. But there is still a spiritual question worth asking: how much of tomorrow am I trying to carry right now?

Peter tells us to cast our anxieties on God because He cares for us. I’ve always been struck by the reason he gives. Not because the situation isn’t serious. Not because everything will happen the way we want. We bring the weight to God because He actually cares for the person carrying it.

There are things about tomorrow that require planning today. Wisdom does that. Anxiety is different. It keeps charging you emotionally for outcomes that haven’t happened and may never happen at all.

Why this matters

Anxiety can spend today on a future you haven’t reached. Trust brings you back to the reality that God is already present where you’re trying to get ahead of Him.

Reflection

What future possibility are you carrying today that you cannot actually do anything about today?

Word of the Day

Anxiety: The restless burden of carrying future uncertainty as though it finally belongs to you.
