Steadfastness Is Not Stubbornness

Scripture (ESV)

“Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord…” — 1 Corinthians 15:58

Steadfastness doesn’t look like much until everything around it starts moving. It doesn’t make a lot of noise. It doesn’t need to announce itself. It just stays. And in a world that keeps rewarding whatever is new, loud, fast, or dramatic, staying can look unimpressive.

But steadfastness isn’t stubbornness. Stubbornness refuses to move because pride is in charge. Steadfastness remains because truth has taken root. There’s a big difference between being hard-headed and being anchored.

A steadfast person isn’t someone who never feels pressure. They feel it. They know what it’s like to be tired, discouraged, misunderstood, or tempted to drift. But they don’t let every wave rename reality. They don’t let every hard moment decide what God already made clear.

Paul ties steadfastness to resurrection hope. That matters because Christian steadfastness isn’t built on personality. It’s built on the truth that your labor in the Lord is not in vain. You can keep standing, not because the work is easy, but because God is real, Christ is risen, and obedience is never wasted in His hands.

Why this matters

If you confuse steadfastness with stubbornness, you may stay in things for the wrong reasons or leave the right things too quickly. But when steadfastness is rooted in God’s truth, you can remain faithful without being ruled by pride or pressure.
