Return Is Not Starting Over
Scripture (ESV)
“Return to me, and I will return to you, says the LORD of hosts.” — Malachi 3:7
Return can feel like failure if you don’t understand formation. You miss the mark. You drift. You get distracted. You fall back into an old rhythm. Then shame shows up and tells you the whole thing is ruined.
But return isn’t the same as starting over. Return is part of the life of faith. It’s what a dependent person does when they realize they’ve moved away from the source.
Daily return is different from dramatic repentance. Sometimes return isn’t a massive life reversal. Sometimes it’s simply turning back to God in the middle of a normal day. You caught the tone. You noticed the drift. You felt the pull. You saw the distance starting to open, and instead of letting it grow, you came back.
That isn’t weakness. That’s formation. A life that knows how to return is less likely to stay lost.
Why this matters
If you treat every drift like total failure, shame will keep you away longer than sin did. But when return becomes daily practice, you learn to come back to God quickly instead of hiding.
