God’s Nearness Is Not Fragile

“The LORD is near to all who call on him.” — Psalm 145:18 (ESV)

Many people quietly believe God’s nearness is fragile.

That it comes and goes.

That it depends on how well we’re doing.

That mistakes create distance.

So when we struggle, we withdraw. When we fail, we hesitate. When we feel numb or distracted, we assume God has stepped back.

But Scripture paints a different picture.

God’s nearness does not fluctuate with our performance.

It is grounded in who He is, not how we feel.

This is where theology steadies us.

God is not emotionally reactive. He is not pulled toward us when we’re strong and pushed away when we’re weak. His presence is not something we earn or maintain.

The theological word underneath this is immutability — God does not change.

That doesn’t mean God is distant or cold. It means His love is reliable. His presence is consistent. His faithfulness is not fragile.

When we forget this, we turn inward. We monitor ourselves constantly — checking if we’ve done enough, believed enough, felt enough.

But God’s nearness is not a reward for good behavior.

It is a gift rooted in His being.

Why This Matters

When we believe God’s nearness is fragile:

• shame grows

• prayer shrinks

• faith becomes anxious

When we trust God’s nearness is secure:

• honesty becomes possible

• confession becomes safe

• growth becomes sustainable

Where have I assumed distance instead of trusting God’s nearness?

What might change if I believed His presence is steady?
