Daily Journey: Day 123

Submission Begins With Reality

Scripture (ESV)

“Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” — James 4:7

Submission is a word we need to handle carefully. It has been used badly. People have used it to control, silence, manipulate, and protect things that had nothing to do with Christ. So we are not going to throw the word around like damage has not been done.

But we also cannot throw the word away, because Scripture does not. Submission starts with reality. God is God. We are not. He is Creator. We are creatures. He is Lord. We are not self-owned, self-defined, self-directed beings with no authority above us.

That is not abuse. That is reality. And when submission is first directed to God, it does not erase your personhood. It puts your life under the only authority strong enough and good enough to hold it rightly.

James says, “Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil.” That order matters. A person who refuses submission to God will still submit somewhere. Maybe to appetite. Maybe to fear. Maybe to culture. Maybe to pride. Maybe to approval. Maybe to pressure. Nobody lives without authority. The only question is what authority is forming you.

Why this matters

If submission is rejected altogether, you may call it freedom while being ruled by lesser things. But when you submit to God, your resistance to what is false becomes stronger because your life is rightly placed under what is true.

Reflection

Where are you resisting God’s authority while calling it independence?
