Daily Journey: Day 113
Attention Has Weight
Scripture (ESV)
“Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise.” — Ephesians 5:15
Earlier, attention had to do with focus. That was true, and it still is. You had to start noticing where your mind went, what captured you, and what you kept looking at when pressure or emotion entered the room.
But at this point, attention has more weight. Attention is not just what you look at. It is what you treat as worthy of your energy, your imagination, your concern, and your leadership. That makes attention a stewardship issue, not just a mental habit.
You only have so much capacity. That is not weakness. That is creatureliness. You are not infinite. You cannot carry everything, notice everything, fix everything, respond to everything, or absorb everything. So what you attend to matters, because attention is one of the ways you spend your life.
Paul says to look carefully how you walk. That is not frantic. It is not anxious. It is sober, grounded, and wise. A life under God cannot stay careless with attention, because careless attention eventually becomes careless living.
Why this matters
If you give weight to everything, you will eventually lose the ability to recognize what actually matters. But when your attention is governed by wisdom before God, your leadership becomes clearer, calmer, and more faithful.
Reflection
What are you giving weight to right now that may not deserve that much of your attention?
