Daily Journey: Day 59

Why Reflection Matters More Than Speed

Scripture (ESV):

“Teach us to number our days that we may get a heart of wisdom.” — Psalm 90:12

Leadership has a strange way of speeding life up.

The more responsibility you carry, the more decisions show up. Messages to answer. Problems to solve. Situations that need clarity. And if you’re not careful, the pace of everything around you starts determining the pace of your thinking.

I’ve felt that pressure more times than I can count.

There have been seasons where I moved so quickly from one decision to the next that I didn’t stop long enough to ask a simple question: What is actually happening here?

That’s where reflection comes in.

Reflection is not inactivity. It’s the discipline of stepping back long enough to see clearly. Sometimes that means asking better questions. Sometimes it means revisiting a decision. And sometimes it simply means admitting that the situation is more complex than we first thought.

In leadership, speed can feel impressive. Reflection rarely does.

But reflection is where wisdom actually grows.

The longer I lead, the more I’ve realized that some of my best decisions didn’t come from reacting quickly. They came from slowing down long enough to understand what was really going on.

That’s not always easy when people are waiting on you.

But wisdom almost always requires a pause.

Why this matters

When leaders never slow down to reflect, they start solving symptoms instead of problems.

Reflection helps us see patterns. It helps us learn from experience. And over time it keeps us from repeating mistakes we should have outgrown.

Sometimes the most responsible thing a leader can do is simply stop for a moment and think.

Reflection

When was the last time I intentionally slowed down to reflect on my decisions instead of just making the next one?

Word of the Day

Reflection — the practice of pausing long enough to examine life with honesty and clarity.
