Daily Journey: Day 57
Why Control Feels Safer Than Dependence
Scripture (ESV):
“Cast your burden on the LORD, and he will sustain you.” — Psalm 55:22
⸻
Control is attractive for a reason.
When life feels uncertain, controlling more variables seems like the responsible thing to do. Plans tighten. Schedules fill up. We manage details carefully so nothing slips through.
I’ve leaned into that instinct many times.
But the more honest I’ve become about it, the clearer something else appears underneath.
Control is often just fear trying to stabilize itself.
Ontology exposes the deeper issue.
Human beings were never designed to hold everything together. We are contingent creatures living inside a world sustained by God. When we try to take on the role of ultimate stabilizer, life eventually pushes back.
There are simply too many variables.
Dependence feels risky because it requires admitting limits. Control feels safer because it creates the illusion that outcomes are manageable.
But illusions have a cost.
Eventually the effort to control everything produces the very anxiety it was meant to prevent.
⸻
Why this matters
When control becomes a way of life, pressure multiplies. Every outcome feels personal because every outcome feels self-managed.
But when responsibility is paired with dependence, something changes. Effort remains — but the weight shifts.
We act faithfully without pretending we are the ones holding reality together.
That’s a healthier way to live.
⸻
Reflection
Where might control be disguising itself as responsibility in my life?
What would it look like to practice dependence instead of tightening control?
⸻
Word of the Day
Yieldedness — the posture of entrusting outcomes to God while remaining faithful in responsibility.
