Obedience Is Not Performance

Scripture (ESV)

“If you love me, you will keep my commandments.” — John 14:15

Obedience can get twisted fast. Some of us hear the word and immediately feel pressure. Prove yourself. Get it right. Don’t mess up. Make God happy with you. And without realizing it, obedience becomes another way to perform.

But Jesus does not talk about obedience like that. He ties it to love. “If you love me, you will keep my commandments.” That changes the whole thing. Obedience is not how you earn His love. It is what love begins to look like when it gets out of your head and into your life.

That makes it more serious, not less. Because now obedience is not just checking a religious box. It is not cleaning up your image. It is not trying to look like the kind of person who has it together. Obedience is the real response of someone who has heard God and trusts Him enough to move.

And that is where this gets uncomfortable. Because at some point you have to stop asking for more clarity about things God has already made clear. Sometimes the next faithful step is not hidden. It is just costly. It touches your pride, your comfort, your control, or your timing. And that is usually where obedience becomes real.

Why this matters

If obedience becomes performance, you will either become proud when you do well or crushed when you fail. But when obedience flows from love and trust, it becomes a steady way of responding to the God who has already given Himself to you.
